The Centre de musique baroque de Versailles is organising two days of round table discussions and experimentation focusing on continuo in 17th and 18th century French opera, with the aim of reviewing historical practices and opening up new perspectives for interpretation.
In line with Graham Sadler's work and publications, these two days of round-table discussions and experimentation aim to re-examine period sources – primarily the collection of separate parts held at the Paris Opera Library – in order to reconsider current practices in continuo in 17th and 18th century French opera: instrumentation, arrangement, playing techniques, performance, and relationship to the orchestra and singers. The first day will be devoted to a theoretical approach in the form of presentations and discussions, while the second will focus on a practical approach, with instruments in hand, based on copies of period scores that are still preserved today. This scientific event is part of the Performance Practice project initiated several years ago at the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles and put into practice in emblematic artistic productions.
