In 2025-2026, the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles is offering a new series of themed days entitled ‘Focus on’, mainly aimed at conservatoire teachers, but also open to any artist interested in the topics covered. These training days provide an opportunity to deepen one's knowledge of a specific subject, with a view to integrating it into one's professional and teaching practice, and then to take advantage of the link established with the CMBV on this occasion to continue to explore the subject in greater depth.
As part of the tercentenary of his death, the CMBV invites conservatories and their early music departments to rediscover Michel-Richard de Lalande, a major figure of French Baroque music. A day of lectures and discussions to stimulate pedagogical reflection on his work. Aimed at performers, teachers, professional musicians, analysis teachers and scholarship classes, this day focusing on this composer, who was so appreciated by Louis XIV, will provide an understanding of the figure he embodied, from his selection as the ‘choix du Roy’ in the competition for assistant master per quarter of the Royal Chapel in 1683, to his extraordinary posterity after his death in 1726. Through a variety of lectures, discussions and analyses of some of his most emblematic pieces, this training day will be an opportunity to perfect your knowledge in light of the latest work by Lalande specialists, to understand the characteristics of his work and to reflect on its interpretation.
Objectives
- (Re)discover the life, career and work of Michel-Richard de Lalande.
- Examine the figure of this composer, emblematic of the French Baroque repertoire, through his influence and legacy.
- Analyse the body of work proposed to celebrate the tercentenary and draw conclusions for its interpretation.
Featuring
Thomas Leconte, researcher and editorial manager (CESR - CMBV)
Bénédicte Hertz, researcher (CESR-CMBV)
Thomas Leconte, researcher and editorial manager (CESR - CMBV)
Thomas Leconte is a researcher in the Research Department of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, where he is also editorial manager of heritage collections. His research focuses mainly on social, religious and court music of the Grand Siècle (functions, repertoires, musical practices, identities). In addition, his historical, theoretical and practical knowledge of 17th and 18th century orchestral and choral writing frequently leads him to reconstruct the missing parts of works in the repertoire. He is currently working on a project (research, reconstruction, edition) on Lalande's Symphonies pour les Soupers du roi. He regularly collaborates with professional ensembles as a scientific advisor (concerts, recordings).
Bénédicte Hertz, researcher (CESR - CMBV)
Bénédicte Hertz is a musicologist and researcher at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (affiliated with UMR 7323 – CESR in Tours). Her work focuses on the 18th century in general, with a particular interest in musical practices, mainly in concert and church settings, musical collections (inventories, codicological studies, copyists, printed corpus), the dissemination of genres and repertoires, social life and concert institutions in France (Paris and the provinces). Since 2022, she has been coordinating the ANR JCJC AcadéC research programme (Les Académies de Concert en France au XVIIIe siècle) and participating in several collaborative and interdisciplinary projects, including ENCCRE (Édition Numérique Collaborative et CRitique de l'Encyclopédie) and Muséfrem (Musiciens d'Église en France à l'époque moderne). Her research in musicology has led to musical editions and the recreation of works using a performance practice approach. At the same time, she seeks to break down barriers within the discipline, enriching it with approaches that draw in particular on cultural history and the history of institutions under the Ancien Régime.
