Programme
Roland
Musical tragedy in one prologue and five acts (1685)
Music by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
Booklet by Philippe Quinault (1635-1688) inspired by the Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto
As a new partner of the CMBV, the Ensemble I Gemelli is working closely on the rediscovery of Roland, performed in particular with instruments from the CMBV's collection. Following Atys, Persée and Cadmus et Hermione, the CMBV is continuing its research work aimed at renewing the interpretation of Lully's operas.
Continuing the work carried out over several years by the CMBV on Lully's operatic works and their interpretation in the 17th and 18th centuries — both musically and in terms of theatre and staging — this new concert production will offer a unique insight into the composer's music.
Passionate about historically informed practice and re-reading sources in the light of research, the Ensemble I Gemelli and its founders and artistic directors, Emiliano Gonzalez-Toro & Mathilde Étienne, take a documented and thoughtful approach to one of Lully's most beautiful operas as far as possible.
For the occasion, the musicians are joining forces with CMBV choir Les Pages & Les Chantres, prepared by Fabien Armengaud, and using instruments from the CMBV's collection, deepening their reflection on reeds and bows, but also on declamation, ornamentation and the relationship to theatre and dance.
