The AcadéC project run by the CMBV and financed by the ANR has now organised two cross-discipline Study Days to define the notion of ‘musical academicism’ in France, on the strength of an initial year’s insights gleaned from the collected sources.
The advent of public concerts (Académies) from 1710 in around forty French towns was unprecedented. These official institutions, somewhere between a learned society and a public entertainment establishment, operated until about 1770 but remain little known and undocumented. This first phase aims to map the Académies, understand the background to their creation, as well as how they operated and evolved.
This season, there will be three preparatory workshops for the Study Days - in November 2022 (CMBV), January 2023 (Lille university - IRHis) & March 2023 (CMBV). They will work on the data gleaned from the current gathering and classification of establishment archives. They will initially focus on available prescriptive texts in an effort to gain an overview of the situation, with the addition of case studies.
Alongside this, two public conferences and a presentation of the archives will be held in Lyon.
