Ensemble Diderot continues their exploration of 18th century French instrumental music for this second joint residency project with the CMBV and the Festival Périgord Noir. The programme showcases the advent of the concerto in the mid-18th century.
The Ensemble Diderot, specialists of string instrument music, and artistic director Johannes Pramsohler have concocted a programme featuring the concerto across a wide range of formats and styles. It includes works by Corrette, Quentin, Boismortier and Buffardin, proponents of evolving musical trends in the mid-18th century, at a time when Italian music predominated. Initially considered a form of chamber music for small ensembles, the concerto was later performed in large concert halls and adopted its more familiar romantic aspect. However, during the reign of Louis XV, it embodied a sophisticated dialogue between musicians, where virtuosity bowed to melody and a subtle interplay of timbres. Parallel to the recital, the ensemble will help sightread neglected instrumental works with a view to publication.
