Psalms of de David
To illustrate the theme of the Prophets, the CMBV choir Les Chantres will be singing two hitherto unpublished cantata by André Campra and several Psalms of David set to music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
The prophet theme was launched by the Philharmonie de Paris music museum. The Chantres, in conjunction with CMBV Publications, will be performing two hitherto unpublished cantata for solo voice by André Campra, Benjamin and Joseph. They were composed for Louis-le-Grand college and were first sung between the Acts in the tragedy Benjamin captif in 1714. Both are (somewhat rare) biblical cantata, which Sébastien de Brossard and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre also composed.
An exciting musical discovery awaits!
Marc-Antoine Charpentier set a large number of psalms to music, most notably the Psalms of David. The CMBV choir Les Chantres will perform Dixit Dominus (H.197), Laudate pueri (H.203), Confitebor tibi (H.220) and Beatus vir (H.221). In these works Charpentier indulged his love of theatricality, colouring verses as only he knew how, notably the dramatic Dentibus suis fremet (with its ‘gnashing of teeth’).They were both major composers during the Grand Siècle, often writing for the Jesuits.
