Piano concertos take pride of place at this residency project bringing together the Concert de la Loge, ADAMA and the CMBV and featuring virtuoso musician Justin Taylor.
The pianoforte gradually replaced the harpsichord in Paris salons from the 1770’s and stimulated a revival of piano music in France during the latter part of the 18th century. The sonata, with or without accompaniment, and the concerto grew in importance through the following century. The most prolific composers, whether French or foreign, such as Schobert, Eckard, Jadin and Rigel, were based in Paris. Julien Chauvin and Justin Taylor have decided to bring Henri-Joseph Rigel out of the shadows. He was born in Germany in 1741, became a French citizen and died in 1799. He was an outstanding keyboard player and a talented composer. He wrote a dozen or so concertos mainly for the pianoforte but playable on the harpsichord. His style noticeably evolves, from his early Empfindzamkeit and Sturm und Drang style compositions when he was in Germany through to his Concertos périodiques for full orchestra written, published and performed in Paris which are more akin to Pleyel or Czerny. Recorded on the Alpha record label, the scores are also published by the CMBV for the occasion.
