EN SAVOIR PLUS
To celebrate the anniversary of the end of the Regency in France, this 2022/23 Season features a production of Polydore, a rare work by Jean-Baptiste Stuck, one of the Regent’s favourite musicians. György Vashegyi and the CMBV embark on this musical adventure in Budapest.
In the wake of the recent release of Rameau’s Fêtes d’Hébé and after last autumn’s revival of Cardonne’s Omphale it is now the turn of Polydore by Jean-Baptiste Stuck. The tragedy will be performed and recorded in Budapest with the CMBV’s loyal musicians (György Vashegyi’s Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir). It was Stuck’s last opera, first performed during the Regency in 1720, then in 1739 but not since. It is, however, full of musical gems and reflects Stuck’s consumate finesse. He lived in Paris but came from Livorno in Tuscany and his music skilfully blends the French and Italian style, his subtle orchestration even a foretaste of Rameau. This rare work is not to be missed. It is performed here by repertoire connoisseurs, starring Hélène Guilmette, Tassis Christoyannis and Thomas Dolié.
