Arias and scenes from operas by Rameau and his contemporaries
The basse-taille voice preceded the baritone and was popular with 17th and 18th century composers for the portrayal of duplicitous calculating traitors. However, in the spectacular mythological world of baroque theatre, these singers were used to portray characters of a different….gender.
Thus, the powerful dark vocals of the formidable Huascar or Abramane could equally wield a Fury’s bloodstained whip, embody Hate or Jealousy, depict the goddess of war Bellona, don the robes of formidable Medusa or of the enamoured old widow Ragonde. Thomas Dolié brings these characters to life under the direction of Stéphanie-Marie Degand and the auspices of the CMBV.
