Le Carnaval de Venise
Opéra-ballet (1699)
Music by André Campra (1660-1744)
Libretto by Jean-François Regnard (1655-1709)
The CMBV has helped mount a new French production of Campra’s Carnaval de Venise de Campra (1699), with staging by Yvan Clédat and Coco Petitpierre and music led by Camille Delaforge and her ensemble Il Caravaggio, in preparation for a French tour.
Published by the CMBV and recorded following a series of performances with Le Concert Spirituel in 2020 for the Campra festival, Le Carnaval de Venise was turned into a stage version in the United States, coproduced with the Boston Early Music Festival in 2016. For the third time the CMBV turns to this work of exceptional theatrical and musical quality, now bringing out a fresh French stage production in association with la co[opéra]tive and various theatres. The project was mounted by Yvan Clédat and Coco Petitpierre, with music by Camille Delaforge and her ensemble. It has a pedagogical slant, coaching eight young singers from Studio Il Caravaggio in French baroque, with advice from musicologists specialised in historically informed practices with the focus on French and Italian opera.
