Programme

Jérôme Dorival, the author of La Cantate française au XVIII^e siècle (PUF, 1999), will present a general introduction to this seminar, focusing on the following themes:

1. Philippe d'Orléans’s brilliant “Italian campaign”;
2. The “courtified” cantata;
3. The myth of Philomela, which founded the cantata genre.

Then the organizers of the seminar will present the upcoming research program:

1. Nathalie Berton-Blivet will attempt to define the protean genre of the cantata, both conceptually and historiographically;
2. Julien Dubruque will present the eleven volumes of critically edited cantatas already published in the CmbV’s collection “voix soliste — ensemble vocal”, and will discuss how they can be contextualized in the editorial history of the French cantata over the last century;
3. Thomas Vernet will explain how the seminar will also deal with musica practica, and how performers and musicologists will work together in workshops around the cantata, both at the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles and at the Fondation Royaumont.

Finally, all three will present the research program’s work in progress: in particular, a catalogue of unpublished manuscript cantatas, and a bibliography, which will both be made available online, in the CmbV’s database, Philidor.
