The CMBV is hosting a session of the CESR research seminar (The European stage – performing arts, the art of performance), focusing on the study of archives in designing stage productions.
Archives have often provided essential insights into how stage productions were designed - plans, drawings, accounts, official deeds and registers provide practical details of the work of artistes and craftsmen as well as their managers and patrons. Many archives are incomplete, lost, or else too brief or hard to interpret. The information needs to be carefully compared with other contemporary sources such as reviews by audiences or critics, press cuttings, librettos, collected documents, etc.
This session will allow exchanges between researchers who are already familiar with this sort of approach. There will be a prior presentation of the documents to be discussed, an exposé of learnings and the remaining grey areas, and lastly a comparison with other original sources (e.g. contemporary archives and printed documents) or recent publications on the subject.
