The Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles invites you to the annual study day of the Muséfrem network, which will be held this year in Moulins. In light of recent publications from the eponymous database, historians, musicologists and members of the network will discuss the disparities and continuities of music ensembles in collegiate churches.
Following the 2020 meetings devoted to cathedral music corps, this year the Muséfrem network is broadening its focus to include French collegiate churches, whose musical practices, though often overshadowed, are no less fascinating. Did these numerous religious institutions (more than 500 in France) also have varied ‘music corps’, reflecting their resources, traditions or the musical quality of the clergy? This abundance invites us to go beyond the local inventory to discern types, families and regularities.
This study day aims to lay the foundations for a collective reflection on these musical ensembles and their role in the cultural and religious life of these places. The presentations will mark a first step towards a new typology of musical practices by examining these types of music from a comparative perspective: between several collegiate churches, at the level of a diocese or a territory, addressing both the number of musicians and their functions, repertoires and social roots.
