The Janus project, born out of the dynamic new partnership between the CMBV and IRCAM, showcases French baroque music and works by four young European composers.
Janus is the Roman deity of beginnings and endings, of choices, gates and transitions. He has two faces, one looking into the past and the other into the future. Mirroring this, for several years now the CMBV as a heritage institution has been working with the IRCAM research institute (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique) under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. It has commissioned four new compositions from four European composers for its choir school. One premiere by Spanish composer Ariadna Tarrés Alsina will be performed in June 2023 at IRCAM’s ManiFeste festival. Two other premieres are scheduled for 2024, by Lithuanian composer Justina Repečkaitė and Serbian composer Jug Marković. One last will be performed in 2025 with French composer Adrien Trybucki. Juxtaposing these modern compositions, our revolutionary partnership presents several 17th and 18th century French baroque pieces serve as a kind of mirror with history.
An encounter in the present, juxtaposing past and future!
