In conjunction with Oxford University, the CMBV is holding a seminar focusing on a comparative study of the relationship between opera singers and their repertoire in 17th and 18th century Europe.

Opera singers have been the focus of research over recent decades. Studies have highlighted the importance of their role in transmitting and circulating opera repertoires throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, of the key issues linked to their careers, the relationship between repertoire and singer has not been exhaustively explored. Recent findings have pointed to new avenues of research based on individual case studies. The objective of this workshop is to pursue the investigation, notably by comparing Italian and French models (the former very geographically mobile and the latter very geographically entrenched). The seminar will cover three topics: the role of singers ; methodological issues ; artist careers and map of European operas.
