The CMBV is running a preparatory workshop prior to publishing a study of the running of the Académie Royale de Musique from an artistic, artisan and pedagogical point of view.

The development of opera in France is intrinsically linked to that of the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. Both genre and institution were born at the same time and evolved in parallel, mutually influencing each other. French opera has been the subject of much research, primarily theoretical literary and musical. Considerations such as stage environment and issues of interpretation have broadened and enriched the field of study.

The institution itself, however, has been less the focus of research. Its economic structure, how it managed artist careers and skills, its staff, suppliers, everyday organisation, the interaction between the various crafts, how it evolved over time and how its repertoire and reputation spread are interesting avenues of research. These aspects are key to understanding the nature of the institution and its repertoire. Its mode of operation subjected artistic creations to a host of pragmatic considerations, and studying them offers a reappraisal of creative input and the very concept of a work. The CMBV aims to publish an overview of the subject in a cross-disciplinary compendium, preceded by a two day preparatory workshop. All contributors will be presenting their proposals, to be discussed at a round table meeting.
