For its first collaboration with the Musée du Grand Siècle, the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles is organising a study day devoted to the singer Anne de La Barre, a famous performer at the court of Louis XIV, followed by a masterclass dedicated to the vocal style of the period preceding the birth of French opera.
This event echoes the rediscovery of a previously unseen portrait of Anne de La Barre, a famous singer at the court of Louis XIV, in a private collection in 2023. The first identified iconographic evidence of a singer in 17th century France, this painting will be exceptionally exhibited to the public in December 2025 at the Petit Château de Sceaux, a precursor to the Musée du Grand Siècle. On this occasion, the CMBV wishes to highlight this discovery by organising a study day, coupled with a masterclass, devoted to the vocal music of the period preceding the creation of French opera, a repertoire in which Anne de La Barre was one of the most emblematic and renowned performers: court ballets, the comedy-ballets of Lully and Molière, and the Italian music of composers present at court in the middle decades of the 17th century.
