For two years Limoges, in partnership with the CMBV, focuses on French baroque music highlighted by the first ever stage performance of a long forgotten masterpiece, La Barre’s La Vénitienne.
Through 2020 and 2021 Limoges conservatoire is focusing on the baroque era. Students are introduced to the specific features of 17th and 18th century French music via a series of round tables and masterclasses run by CMBV staff and repertoire specialists. Against the background of the final years of Louis XIV, and iconic figures such as Campra, Destouches, Couperin and Marais, a series of exploratory and training sessions are held on baroque vocals, music, dance and scenography. In 2021 the project will culminate in a stage revival of a long forgotten French baroque work, La Barre’s La Vénitienne – a comic opera first performed at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1705, whose style and form reflect contemporary taste for Italian and particularly Venetian imagery as popularised by Campra with his Carnaval de Venise and Fêtes vénitiennes.
