ThéPARis-France cross-disciplinary research seminar organised by the CMBV in association with Côte d’Azur and Sorbonne universities. It is a continuation of the research project started last year in the French Provinces.
The 2024 ThéPARis-France research seminar continues its exploration of the movement of artists, ideas and practices among the various French theatres – it first covers the centrifugal force exerted by Paris on the Provinces and vice versa; then the dynamics between theatres and theatre troupes within the same town, and finally, the links between theatres in different towns and regions.
The biggest challenge of this research lies in reconstituting the provincial repertoires, as much less is known about them than about the Paris theatres. It will require painstaking research into primary sources (scripts, scores, iconography, etc.). Another key issue is that of identifying the playwrights, players and theatre crews, to understand how they circulated and how their careers evolved.
